Zjvoltis

Objective: Capture your opponent’s Orangutan King or move your own Orangutan King to the center of the board.

Equipment:

  • A 10×10 game board.
  • Animal-shaped pieces: zebra, jaguar, vampire, orangutan, leopard, tiger, insect and seahorse. The name Zjvoltis is an abbreviation of all the pieces.

Starting Position: Set up the pieces on the board as shown in the image.

Gameplay:

Take turns moving one of your animal pieces.

Moving Pieces:

  • To move a piece, rotate it counterclockwise around the midpoint of one of the squares it covers.
  • You can rotate a piece 90°, 180°, or 270° (1, 2, or 3 hectogradians).
  • A piece cannot rotate into squares occupied by your own pieces or off the board.

Capturing Pieces:

  • Capture a piece if any part of your piece lands on a square occupied by the opponent’s piece after a rotation.
  • In one move, you can capture up to three of your opponent’s pieces.
  • You can’t capture your own pieces.

How to Win

  • Capture your opponent’s Orangutan King.
  • Move your own Orangutan King to the center of the board (the central four squares).

Draw Conditions

The game ends in a draw if:

  • 50 moves happen without any piece being captured.
  • The same position occurs three times.

Notation

In Zjvoltis, moves are described using a simple notation system. Each move consists of three parts:

1. The piece’s letter, where each piece is represented by a unique letter from ZJVOLTIS:  Z = Zebra, J = Jaguar, V = Vampire bat, O = Orangutan, L = Leopard, T = Tiger, I = Insect and S = Seahorse.

2. The square that the piece rotates around, indicated by its column (a–j) and row (0–9), where a0 refers to the dark lower left square that is covered by the white Orangutan in the starting position.

3. The rotation angle, expressed in hgrad (hectogradians) counterclockwise:

1 hgrad = 100 grad = 90°

2 hgrad = 200 grad = 180°

3 hgrad = 300 grad = 270°.

For example, the move Ze51 means the Zebra rotates counterclockwise by 90° around square e5.

Enjoy the game and good luck protecting your Orangutan King and claiming victory!
